Dr. Rutishauser's book makes a significant contribution to the ever-growing literature on Rabbi Soloveitchik's thought. Displaying impressive erudition and insight, he expands our understanding of the Rav's intellectual milieu and articulates with palpable admiration the relevance of his Halakhah-centered approach to the modern world.
~ David Shatz, Ph.D, Professor of Philosophy
Yeshiva University, New York, NY.
The publication of The Human Condition and the Thought of Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik, by Christian M. Rutishauser, S.J., makes possible a new level of Christian-Jewish dialogue. In this groundbreaking work, a Catholic Jesuit priest pioneers Christian scholarly research into the life and world of the greatest Jewish religious genius of the 20th Century-the Rav, Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik, with emphasis on his Halakhic way of life. This introduction of the Rav to the Christian world presages the realization of Pope John Paul II's dream and expressed wishes that Christians would enrich their faith and liturgical prayer specifically through dialogue with their Jewish brethren on the forms and rituals of Jewish prayer. This book should be in the hands of every Christian who cares about the roots of his religion and Jewish-Christian dialogue.
~ Mother Mary Xavier McMonagle O.S.B., Superior General
Tyburn Nuns, London, U.K.
There is much to like in this book: the clarity of the writing, the thoroughness of the research, but most of all, the devotion that Rutishauser brings to his subject matter. It is a must read for anyone interested in the thought of Joseph B. Soloveitchik or the history of Orthodox Judaism in 20th Century America.
~ Kenneth Seeskin, Ph.D., Professor of Jewish Civilization
Northwestern University, Evanston, IL.
Rutishauser, an important contributor to the theological discussion among Jews and Christians in Europe, presents a comprehensive and readable analysis of the writings of Soloveitchik. This is a major contribution to our knowledge of a future often referred to in the Christian-Jewish dialogue but whose actual viewpoints have not been well known.
~ John T. Pawlikowski OSM, Ph.D, Professor of Social Ethics Director, Catholic-Jewish Studies Program Catholic Theological Union, Chicago, IL.
